How to Do a Hanoi Visa Run

A visa run means leaving Vietnam and coming back to reset your entry stamp. Most people staying long-term on tourist visas or visa exemptions hit the 30-day mark and need a fresh stamp to stay legally. Some do it every month. Others do it once while waiting for a longer visa or a temporary residence card to be processed.

From Hanoi, the most practical route runs south to the Lao Bao border crossing in Quang Tri province. It is about 300 km each way. A private car or shared van picks you up from your hotel before dawn, drives you to the border, and you cross into Laos long enough to get an exit stamp and turn around. The whole trip takes about 14 hours door to door.

We also offer an optional 90-day Vietnam E-Visa desk. Once Dansavanh stamps you out, we file the application on your behalf. By the time you are back in Hanoi, the approval PDF is usually in your email.

Pick a date and tell us where you want to be picked up. We cover the Old Quarter, Tay Ho, Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, Long Bien, Gia Lam, and Soc Son. With advance notice we can also meet you at Noi Bai Airport or Ocean Park.

You choose between a private SUV for yourself or your group, or a shared van where you split the ride with a few other travelers. Private cars give you flexibility on timing and stops. Shared vans cost less but run on a fixed schedule.

When you book through our form, you can add the 90-day E-Visa service at the same time. Upload your passport scan and a portrait photo before departure, and we handle the rest.

We collect riders between 4:00 and 5:30 AM. The early start puts us ahead of traffic and gets us to the border well before the lunch rush. Our driver confirms the night before and sends a WhatsApp message when on the way.

The route runs south out of Hanoi onto the Ho Chi Minh Highway, then connects to QL217 through the mountains toward Lao Bao. It is about a four-to-five-hour drive. The van has snacks and water, and there is a rest stop about halfway. The scenery changes from the city sprawl to farmland, then to the hills near the border.

You arrive at the Vietnamese side of Lao Bao around 9:00 AM. Our Thanh Hoa fixer meets you at the checkpoint. They handle the paperwork at both the Vietnamese exit counter and the Lao entry counter at Dansavanh. They also process the Laos visa-on-arrival for anyone who needs one. Visa-exempt travelers still follow the fixer for correct stamp sequencing.

The crossing itself takes about 15 minutes including the walk between the two gates. Once you are stamped into Laos, you turn around and come back through the same gates in reverse order. The fixer escorts you the whole way. Most people are back on the Vietnamese side by noon.

If you added the 90-day E-Visa service, this is the moment we submit your application. The Vietnam Immigration Department starts processing as soon as Laos stamps you out.

After clearing the border, the van heads north again. We stop in Thanh Hoa for lunch around 1:00 or 2:00 PM. The driver knows a few spots with decent food and cold drinks. You have about 45 minutes to eat and stretch.

The rest of the drive takes about three hours depending on traffic around Vinh and Ha Tinh. We drop you at your hotel or the agreed meeting point between 6:00 and 8:00 PM. The driver sends a final WhatsApp when you are 30 minutes out so you know when to expect arrival.

• • Light bag or small daypack if you are in a shared van. Space is limited.
• • Phone charger, earphones, a jacket for the air conditioning

Rather than doing a visa run every 30 days, you can apply for a 90-day Vietnam E-Visa. The application is submitted the moment Laos stamps you out, which means you meet the "exit before applying" requirement without extra trips.

You just upload your passport data page and a portrait photo at booking time. We submit the application, track its status, and email you the approval PDF when it comes through. Processing times are three tiers:

• • Fast: about 2 to 3 working days
• • Rush: as fast as the immigration office moves. Usually within 24 hours.

The 90-day visa is single-entry or multi-entry. We ask which you prefer during booking. If you travel a lot in and out of Vietnam, the multi-entry option saves you another run down the road.

The fare covers the driver, fuel, tolls, the bilingual fixer at Lao Bao, snacks, and water. Laos visa-on-arrival fees are not included. E-Visa costs are separate from the transport fare. Payments can be made in VND or USD. Private car passengers pay on return. Shared seats pay before departure.

Some people fly out of Noi Bai to Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur for a visa run. A round-trip flight plus a night in a hotel costs more than the land border run and takes longer. The land route is a single day, no overnight, and you are back in Hanoi by evening. The downside is a long day in the car. The upside is doing the whole thing in one shot with someone else handling the border paperwork.
