Laos Digital Immigration Form 2026: The Third Document on a Hanoi Visa Run

Laos retired the paper arrival and departure card. In its place is the Lao Digital Immigration Form, which everyone shortens to LDIF. You fill it in online at immigration.gov.la, the portal hands you a QR code, and you show that code at the Laos counter instead of scribbling on a card with a borrowed pen while a queue forms behind you.

The rollout started on 1 September 2025 at four checkpoints: Wattay airport in Vientiane, Luang Prabang airport, Pakse airport, and the first Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge. The stated plan was nationwide coverage at every border gate through 2026, with paper forms dropped entirely. By the middle of 2026, visa services and travel advice pages had moved to describing the LDIF as required at every international checkpoint, land crossings included, and that list is where Dansavanh opposite Lao Bao sits.

The official wording is broader than any timetable: all foreign nationals and stateless people travelling on a passport must register through the LDIF before entering or departing Laos. Nobody has published an exemption for same-day visa runners, and a turnaround is one entry plus one exit. Two things make it worth ten minutes of your evening in Hanoi. It is free, and it is the only item on the run that cannot be sorted at the counter. Everything else at Dansavanh is a queue, a fee or a photo you can buy on the spot.

The portal takes an arrival registration inside the three days before the date you cross, and the QR code it issues stays valid for three days. That cuts both ways. File a week out and the code can age out before your van reaches Quang Tri. File it in the dark at 04:00 from the pickup point and you are inside the window but working from a phone tethered to a hotspot in a car park, which is not the moment to discover the passport photo upload failed.

For the Tuesday and Saturday departures the arithmetic is simple, because your arrival date is the departure date. Tay Ho pickup runs 04:00 to 05:30, the van reaches Lao Bao around 10:45, and both stamps happen the same morning. So a Tuesday run gets filed on the Saturday, Sunday or Monday before it. Saturday evening is the comfortable slot: enough time to fix a typo, no risk of the code expiring before you have used it.

The arrival card wants nine things. None of them is difficult, and two of them are the reason people end up starting over on a phone with 8 percent battery.

• Passport number, dates of issue and expiry, place of issue.
• A photo of the passport bio page, both MRZ lines readable, colour, under about 2 MB.
• A selfie of you holding that open passport. Yes, really. The Laos form asks for it as a mandatory attachment.
• The arrival checkpoint and arrival date. From Hanoi that is Dansavanh, on the date of your crossing.
• Purpose of entry. Tourism covers a visa run.
• Means of transport: car or bus. A private car run goes in as car; the shared van as bus.
• An address in Laos. This is the field that stalls same-day runners, who have no booking.
• Visa details if you already hold a Laos e-visa: number, issue date and place.
• Contact number and country of origin.

The address field is the one that trips up a turnaround. You are not staying anywhere. The practical answer is the guesthouse in Dansavanh village that the run uses, because it is a real address the Laos officer can see from the window, and our fixer files the group's registration against it. If you are filing on your own, name a guesthouse you could actually check into and have its name to hand. Do not type a hotel you invented; a registration that collapses under a single question is worse than a slow one.

The other habit worth building is proof you can show without signal. The Laos side of Lao Bao has patchy wifi, and the point of a digital form is lost if the only evidence of it lives behind a login you cannot reach. Submit the arrival card and the departure card as two separate registrations, screenshot both QR codes, and write the confirmation numbers on the same paper as your e-visa details. Two minutes at the hotel desk in Hanoi saves a long conversation at the counter in Savannakhet province.

The mix-up we hear most on the WhatsApp line is people treating these as one piece of paperwork. They come from two different governments, they cost different amounts, and only one of them is filed at the last minute.

Four things break a run, and none of them is the form being difficult.

• The right document on the wrong side. The LDIF belongs to Laos. Vietnam's e-visa is a separate approval from a separate government, and it has to exist before you board. A booking confirmation is not an approval.
• Filing too early. The three-day validity applies to the code, not to your trip. A registration filed ten days out is a wasted registration.
• No offline proof. Screenshots of the QR code, not just the email. Border wifi on the Laos side is unreliable enough that we treat signal as a bonus, not a plan.
• Reading the rollout as an exemption. During 2025 travellers crossing at smaller land gates reported the pilot being enforced mainly at the four original checkpoints, airports and Friendship Bridge I. By mid 2026 the advice pages had it mandatory at every international checkpoint, and Lao immigration's own wording never limited it to four. We file it for every group rather than test the difference.

By the time the van reaches Quang Tri, the LDIF should be a screenshot on your phone and a line of text in your documents folder. Everything after that is the crossing itself.

1. Night before, at the hotel: submit the arrival registration, screenshot the QR code, note the confirmation number next to your e-visa details.
2. 04:00 to 05:30: pickup in Tay Ho, then Long Bien, Gia Lam or the Old Quarter, depending on your booking. Nothing LDIF-related happens at this hour.
3. 10:45: Lao Bao. The Vietnamese exit stamp first, then the short walk to the Dansavanh counter.
4. At the Laos counter: QR code shown, visa on arrival paid in USD cash or the e-visa handed across. Visa-exempt passports walk through with the registration and nothing else.
5. The departure registration: filed from Hanoi as well. Laos wants the digital card on the way out, not only on the way in.
6. Back across by 15:00 for a fresh Vietnam entry stamp. The LDIF goes in the same folder as the last one and stops being interesting.

The registration side is ours.
