How Much Does a Hanoi Visa Run Cost?

A Hanoi visa run to the Lao Bao border costs between 1,500,000 VND and 5,100,000 VND for transport, plus whatever you pay for your new visa. That range covers the two ways to travel: a shared van seat or a private car for your group. On top of that sits the 90-day e-visa, which most riders add so they come home with a fresh stamp the same day.

Three things decide your total. How you travel: shared seats cost the least per person, while a private car costs more but gives you the whole vehicle. Where you are picked up: central Hanoi zones are cheaper than the outer districts. And how fast you need your e-visa: the 1-hour rush tier costs more than the 4-day tier, and multi-entry visas cost more than single-entry.

There are no surprise fees on top. The price you agree on covers the driver, the fuel, the tolls, the fixers at the border, and the ride home. The only thing you might pay at the border itself is the Laos entry fee, if Laos requires a visa for your passport. That is paid directly to the Lao immigration counter, not to us.

If you want the run done on your own schedule, a private car is the way to go. The rate is per car, and the SUVs seat up to four travelers with Wi-Fi, power outlets, and cold drinks in the back.

Both rates include the same package: a bilingual driver, all Ho Chi Minh Highway tolls, the fixer team in Thanh Hoa and at Lao Bao, and the return leg. The same driver and fixer team handle the whole run, so you are not handed off to strangers at the border. The extra 300,000 VND on the outer zone covers the longer drive out to collect you and back. Optional drop in Tay Ho on return, and an extra luggage trailer on request.

The per-car price is the same whether one person rides or four. A couple splitting a private car pays 2,400,000 VND each. A group of four pays about 1,200,000 VND each, which beats the shared van per head. Borderline addresses get quoted case by case when you book, rather than forced into the higher band.

The shared van is the budget option, and for solo travelers it is usually the smart one. Shared runs depart twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, from Tay Ho and Long Bien. You book a seat, not the whole vehicle, so the price is per person.

Luggage is carry-on only, so a backpack or a small rolling bag is fine. The Laos visa fee, if your passport needs one, is paid directly at the Dansavanh counter and is not part of the seat price. There is a quick lunch stop in Thanh Hoa on the way back, and the van waits while everyone eats.

Departures consolidate. If a Tuesday run ends up with only a couple of riders, we merge it into the Saturday run rather than sending a half-empty van. Rebooking is free, and you get the driver's photo, the vehicle plate, and an estimated return time 24 hours before departure.

The trade-off versus a private car is time and flexibility. A shared van leaves at a fixed time from a fixed point, while a private car collects you from your door. For a solo rider the shared seat is the clear value pick. At three or four passengers, the private car starts to win.

Most riders need a new visa to come back with, and the standard move is the 90-day Vietnam e-visa. You upload your passport scan and portrait before the run. The moment Laos stamps your exit, the visa desk submits your application and tracks it until the approval PDF lands in your inbox. Tiers run Monday to Friday.

If you already applied for an e-visa on your own and it is stuck in processing, the push-only option is cheaper. Share your application ID before you leave Hanoi. Once you exit Vietnam, the desk escalates your existing application and pushes it through. Push fees apply only if the escalation succeeds.

You get email and WhatsApp updates at every status change. Multi-entry is worth the extra cost if you plan to leave Vietnam again within the 90 days, because it saves you from paying and waiting twice.

The most common surprise for first-timers is the Laos side. People assume the Laos entry is bundled because the fixer walks them through it. It is not. The fixer guides you, but the Laos counter fee comes out of your pocket. It is a modest amount, usually well under 1,000,000 VND, but carry some cash anyway. The border area has no reliable ATMs, and the shops there do not take cards.

Carry your passport and a printed copy of your e-visa approval, if you have one. The fixers can print documents at the border for a small fee, but it is faster and cheaper to bring your own.

The pattern is simple: the more people in your car, the lower the per-head cost, and the slower your visa tier, the lower the fee. The 3-day and 4-day tiers give the same 90-day validity as the rush tiers for a fraction of the price.
